The Return of History
Some brilliant scholar has to write a comprehensive history of modern economics because the evolution of this field is clearly one of the most consequential things happening in the world today.
DAVID BROOKS is still thinking in the frame of the Marxist theory he learned in school. Karl thought in a frame of Christian morality. People are not inherently good as Marx assumed. Lord Keynes comes much closer to reality though he is fifty years dead. Mankiew is ok but Mr. Brooks would do well to read Krugman's textbook. Perhaps he cannot. Krugman likes Samuelson.
The Return of History
it's interesting that no where is marx mentioned. he predicted the catastrophes of capitalism as well as its accomplishments. and his political economy is primarily built up from the works of adam smith and david ricardo. adam smith, though, with his trenchant criticism of really-existing capitalists, is to be revered but not read. anyway, since we're all presently in a global crisis of capitalism, maybe marx should get some props. just saying.
He gets much. Rand is where it comes from.
I have not liked Marxists since I met some. They are self righteous and irrational as are Rand believers.
