Both Jefferson and Franklin were autodidacts.

Neither had much use for trade schools.  

The colleges of the day were trade schools for clergy.

Jefferson built a university and a revolution.

Franklin built a public library, a postal system, natural philosophy and an alliance with France that won Jefferson's revolution.

Learning is essential.  A degree is evidence.
