Bringing Big Data to the Fight Against Benefits Fraud

To detect possible abuse of programs or benefits, state and local governments are turning to data-mining techniques long used by financial services companies.
Data-Mining and Database Marketing; Frauds and Swindling; Computers and the Internet; Welfare (US); Medicaid; Food Stamps; Unemployment Insurance

I notice that their illustrative examples are all from the management side.
The poor do not seem to be in the business of cheating.

Duke Energy Is Charged in Huge Coal Ash Leak

Federal prosecutors accused the nation’s largest electric utility of violating the federal Clean Water Act in a spill last year in North Carolina.
Water Pollution; Hazardous and Toxic Substances; Rivers; Suits and Litigation (Civil)

The reports of the first settlement made me unhappy.
I am pleased to see that litigation continues and costs to Duke Energy are rising.

Meet the Unlikely Airbnb Hosts of Japan

A world-conquering start-up finds itself lost in translation in Tokyo.
Travel and Vacations; Hotels and Travel Lodgings

You can do that if you want to.
I would rather host than visit.

It is an interesting view of Japan.
Know that there is traditionally no acoustic privacy.
Life was rigidly formal and hierarchical.
For many it still is.

January Inflation in Britain Falls to Lowest Since Records Began

British consumer price inflation eased last month to its lowest level since records began in 1989 and looks set to slow further, lifting voters' disposable incomes as national elections approach.
Deflation (Economics)

Below target inflation is not a good thing.

How Useful Are Standardized Tests?

Educators discuss an Op-Ed essay defending annual tests and suggest alternative ways to assess schools.
Tests and Examinations; Education (K-12); No Child Left Behind Act; Teachers and School Employees

I do not have a definitive answer.

The process should begin with understanding how children learn.
The children can be taught what they can best adsorb.
They can then be tested on what they have adsorbed
When they have adsorbed a body of knowledge they can learn to use it.
A test can examine their ability to reason.

Colorado: N.A.A.C.P. Was Not Target of Blast

The man behind a small explosion last month near a Colorado Springs N.A.A.C.P. office was actually targeting an accountant who worked in the same building, according to court documents filed Friday.
Bombs and Explosives; Arson

Ok. The N.A.A.C.P. was not the target.
Thaddeus Murphy is probably insane.

A High-End Property Collapse in Singapore

The government’s plan to stall a property boom that had become a symbol of inequality has worked only too well.

Separate Philanthropy From Political Clout

Money has been flowing from abroad into the Clinton Foundation, which raises too many questions about potential conflicts of interest for a probable presidential candidate.

Expect Hillary Clinton to raise campaign funds separately from Bill's  foundation.
