Fixing Immigration in the Field

The policies in Washington, however good they may be, are useless if they are not enacted where it counts.
Immigration and Emigration; Illegal Immigration; Discrimination; Hispanic-Americans; Deportation

"The problem is that Homeland Security has farmed out that discretion — strewn it, actually — across the country, among state and local law enforcement agencies whose officers may only dimly recognize, or not care about, the dangers of an indiscriminate immigrant dragnet. Through programs linking local law enforcement with federal agencies, the administration has vastly increased the numbers of low-priority minor offenders and noncriminals it sweeps up. And it has failed to police its own agencies and employees to ensure that its own rules and priorities are followed."

Seeking Shelter From Rain and, Possibly, Finding Love

The following poems about rain and love were “found” this week in the Missed Connections section of newyork.craigslist.com.
Poetry and Poets; Rain

Some are just verse:

I Wish I Was the Brakeman
on a hurtlin’ fevered train
crashing a-headlong
into the heartland
like a cannon in the rain
with the beating of the sleepers
and the burnin’ of the coal
counting the towns flashing by
in a night that’s full of soul
with light in my head
with you in my arms

Sooner is better.
As soon as you can is best.

A Painfully Slow Ebola Response

With the outbreak in West Africa appearing more out of control than ever, help is finally arriving to assist the local governments in fighting the epidemic.
Ebola Virus; Epidemics

Ebola blooms in the past have quickly burnt out as the infected population died in isolation.
A similar behavior was expected this time.
Unfortunately conditions are different.
Transportation is much faster.
The disease has entered urban concentrations of people.  It will burn until people run out.
Death, departure or isolation will stop it.
