Will a Boom for Oil and Gas Delay Renewable Energy? - Room for Debate
New ways to extract oil and natural gas could buy the U.S. some time to develop renewable energy. Or they could keep us addicted to dirty fuels.
We will not change unless it pays.
There is built plant and sunk costs all the way through the energy business.
Cheaper fossil carbon will delay the change to alternatives.
External costs do not seem to make a difference.

Cheap Gas Is a Trap - Room for Debate
Today's abundant fossil fuels should not distract us from tomorrow's renewable solutions.
Global Warming is the driver for the removal of fossil carbon from civilization.  The enthusiasts of money now seem to have won the day.
A twenty foot rise in sea level will effectively close the trap.  Most of the world's cities are going away.  It will not be fast.  The population will survive.  Civil engineering will be lucrative for a hundred years.  We can build electric cities now or in a few decades.  We will build them.

A Reality Check on Renewables - Room for Debate
We are far from ready to shift to solar, wind, geothermal or even nuclear power. We are, however, ready to wean off of Mideast oil.
Ready has nothing to do with it.
We must end the use of fossil carbon.
Alternatively we must abandon all coastal wetlands.

Hunting for Oil Is an Outmoded Strategy - Room for Debate
Hunting for more oil is a 100-year-old answer to the energy challenge. Clean fuels and better-performing engines offer 21st century solutions.
We must end the use of fossil carbon.
Alternatively we must abandon all coastal wetlands.

"We can't let the Haitians in.  The blacks might get ideas."

French was having a very tough time.  Patois is closely related.
Another guess is the Cubans don't want to share.
I don't know and I really don't want to know.  It was bad policy.

Indonesia’s Voters Retreat From Radical Islam
This has also been true in Bangladesh, the third largest moslem country in the world. Neither of these countries are 'arab'.
We are not seen as a threat. Radical Islam sees any departure from their consensus as heresy.  That does not make for good relations.

Does IMF Stand for Impressive Macroeconomic Flexibility?
So the IMF is holding a meeting on rethinking macroeconomic policy (I was invited but couldn’t make the timing work.) And the Fund’s chief economist has already made it clear that he’s open to some serious revision of the prevailing paradigm.
      The parties are negotiating.
