Senator Bunning’s Universe
This reads like I would describe the situation.

The GOP's primary goal is to see to it that Obama doesn't succeed at anything - especially not at anything that might be good for the American public. If Obama were able to solve the health care problems, cure unemployment, end the recession, and balance the budget, they'd not permit any of it, because --horrors!-- people might vote for him again in 2012. Better that none of the nation's problems get solved. If fear and misery will bring them votes, then they're happy to see more fear and more misery. Letting things get worse is the strategy, and a paralyzed Congress is their most potent weapon. And that's where the right wing alternative universe comes into play. The GOP leadership isn't alone out there; millions of Americans live there too, in a weird world where "news" and "facts" are exclusively delivered by Rupert Murdoch's media, Sarah Palin is presidential material, Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity and Coulter are sages, and "Christian" values are handed down by the likes of Pat Roberson. Former GOP health care ideas are now socialist plans for a government "takeover". The earth isn't even warming, over there in the alternate universe. Bipartisanship with people who don't seem to live on the same planet is a pretty tall order, but Obama, by virtue of having tried, can at least stake a claim to the high ground as he carries on without the Republicans. It's high ground in the real world, at any rate.
