Frieze Week Descends on London

With nine fairs, seven auctions, and more than 150 selling exhibitions in galleries, London’s "Frieze Week,” which starts Monday, is a hectic seven days in the art world.

I would walk all day and see little I needed to see.

I make things.

There are museums I must see.

Republicans to Investigate Environmental Group’s Influence on Carbon Rule

The inquiry, to be led by Representative Darrell Issa of California and Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, will look at whether the Environmental Protection Agency allowed an advocacy group too much sway in developing a regulation to curb carbon emissions.

A waste of attention and time.

Dam Rising in Ethiopia Stirs Hope and Tension

Ethiopia is a poor country, but officials say the Renaissance Dam, one of Africa’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, will be paid for without foreign assistance.
Infrastructure (Public Works); Levees and Dams; Hydroelectric Power

"GUBA, Ethiopia — There is a remote stretch of land in Ethiopia’s forested northwest where the dust never settles. All week, day and night, thousands of workers pulverize rocks and lay concrete along a major tributary of the Nile River. It is the site of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the continent’s biggest hydropower plant and one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects ever in Africa."

Dams are just not a good idea.

Investigation Into Missing Iraqi Cash Ended in Lebanon Bunker

Between $1.2 billion and $1.6 billion in Iraqi funds were stolen after the American invasion and moved to rural Lebanon, a former United States investigator said for the first time, but the trail ended there.

The Problem With Energy Efficiency

It would be a mistake to assume that LEDs will significantly reduce overall energy consumption.
Light-Emitting Diodes; Energy Efficiency; Alternative and Renewable Energy; Electric Light Bulbs; Electric Light and Power; Nobel Prizes

We need to raise the cost of fossil carbon.
There is no question there.
This piece of foggy thinking is not helping.
A major cost of electric power has been the distribution wires.  Led lighting can easily be solar powered.  In the developing world it is and will be.
Solar power does not add significantly to the carbon loading of the atmosphere.
Where the power grid exists there will be four fifths reduction in the lighting load.  Application of LEDs does not require an extension of the power grid.
