Something Happening Here

In the space of eight days, the Supreme Court managed to touch on many of American society’s hottest of hot-button issues without actually issuing an opinion.

Don't Make a Bad Deal With Iran

The Islamic Republic is the greatest threat to global security; it must not be allowed to have nuclear weapons.

Iran can buy bombs from Pakistan.
That issue is over.
We must make the best deal we can.

After Deportation Threats and a Long Wait, Citizenship for a Lifesaver

Mohammad Sarfaraz Hussain, a New Yorker from Pakistan, was tagged for deportation at age 18 after complying with the post-Sept. 11 “special registration” program. Now Mr. Hussain, an E.M.T., is becoming a citizen.

There's Cancer In My Future. How Am I Supposed to Feel?

I know I have the BRCA 1 mutation, and I know I have a strong chance of developing ovarian or breast cancer. But I am 32 years old, and I don’t know what to do with that knowledge.
Breast Cancer; Cancer; Ovarian Cancer; Parenting; Tests (Medical)

We will not go gentle into that good night.

In Cities With West African Populations, Hospitals Take Extra Steps

Patient screening, protections for hospital employees and efforts to encourage people to report symptoms and take precautions are being put in place.
Ebola Virus; Hospitals; Liberian-Americans; Protective Clothing

About the best we can do is a twenty one day quarantine on travelers from infected areas.  Hospital preparedness is necessary though no special caution is required in areas with West African populations.
They are no more vulnerable than the rest of the population.

Power Plants Seek to Extend Life of Nuclear Reactors

Nuclear proponents say that extending plants’ lifetimes is more economical — and a better way to hold down carbon dioxide emissions — than building new plants.
Nuclear Energy; Engineering and Engineers; Carbon Dioxide; Radiation

No design is perfect.
The operating plants are as near perfect as our knowledge allows.
Equipment and procedures  must be kept current.
There must be a proximate cause for license revocation.
The fact that they are nuclear is not enough.

Fed Is Silent on Doomsday Book, a Blueprint for Fighting Crises

The Doomsday Book is a collection of legal opinions on the Fed’s authority to fight financial crises. And that’s all the New York Fed has to say.
Subprime Mortgage Crisis

In the last financial crisis the Fed found itself unprepared.
Preparation for the next crisis is part of the function of this institution.
In the housing bubble collapse an amplifier was the lenders ability to game the bond rating houses rating procedure.  Preventing such gaming seems a reasonable precaution.
The Federal Reserve Bank has only the powers granted it in law.
Other financial organizations are responsible to know and obey the law.
Emergency powers are to be exercised in an emergency.
We can know what they are.
The fed has the responsibility to know their limits.
The other "banks" do not want to find out.

Proposal Could Alter Use of Apps to Dispatch Cabs in New York City

A rule proposed by the de Blasio administration would effectively restrict the number of companies a driver could work for, some drivers and app companies argued.

Despite Poverty Efforts, China Still Faces Income Gap

China says that it has lifted 660 million people out of poverty and that more than 90 percent of poverty alleviation in recent decades has occurred in China. Other research shows income inequality is severe.

The problem is all the quoted numbers are true as far as I know.
Though the government of China is "riding the tiger" the beast is developing a bigger appetite.
I am curious to see how the government deals with a reactionary socialist party.

Calls to Use Yucca Mountain as a Nuclear Waste Site, Now Deemed Safe

A report concluded that the design for a proposed disposal spot 100 miles from Las Vegas had the required multiple barriers to ensure long-term safety.

The political problem was the transport of wastes across state lines and through populated areas.
Trying to activate Yucca Mountain looks like a formula for electoral defeat.

I would have to study the situation in detail as the court has done.
I believe the court has given due consideration to the objections thus far.
