Investors Seek Yields in Europe, but Analysts Warn of Risk
Investors are piling into the government debt of bailed-out countries like Ireland. But the demand comes despite the problems still plaguing the euro zone.Running Economies Into the Sand
Hmm. Allies of the Cameron government are now taunting Hollande
as having run the French economy “into the sand” — presumably by
contrast with the British triumph. How does that look in terms of, you
know, actual numbers?
Here’s French and British real GDP since the beginning of the crisis:
Eurostat
Neither economy has covered itself with glory, but this sure doesn’t look like a British triumph.
OK, but maybe we should only look at
developments since the coalition took power. That’s actually a bad idea —
economies do tend to rebound from deep slumps, so you would expect
faster growth since the trough in Britain, which had the deeper slump.
Still, for what it’s worth:
Eurostat
British performance was clearly worse than
French until the last couple of quarters, when it pulled slightly ahead.
Again, hardly the kind of thing that would justify the boasting.
It really is amazing to watch a so far brief
and not all that impressive cyclical upswing get sold as a gigantic
policy triumph. But I guess that’s politics."
Europe is scary.
