U.S. Is Using Taiwan as a Pressure Point in Tech Fight With China
The Trump administration is challenging Chinese access to Taiwan’s
high-tech supply chain — and, by extension, Beijing’s influence over the
island it claims as its territory.
This is a tactic that will fail.

Facing Adulthood With an Economic Disaster’s Lasting Scars
Those entering the job market in a downturn may never catch up in pay,

Trump Says He’s Taking Hydroxychloroquine, Prompting Warning From Health Experts
His announcement drew immediate criticism from a range of medical experts,
who warned not just of the dangers it posed for the president’s health but
also of the example it set.
Failure is probable.

Jailed Saudis Seek Influence in Washington to Counter Crown Prince
Some are hiring lobbyists with links to the Trump administration, looking
to build support at a time when the de facto Saudi ruler is beset by
economic problems and criticism over human rights violations.
Saudi Arabia is a sovereign absolute monarchy.
This is probably another emoluments violation.

U.S.-China Feud Over Coronavirus Erupts at World Health Assembly
China’s president pledged $2 billion to fight the virus, a move the United
States criticized as an effort to head off scrutiny of its handling of the
pandemic.
Trump should stop whining.

Can Biden Expand the Map?
There are signs that Joe Biden’s campaign is exploring more paths to
victory in the Electoral College than recent Democratic nominees.
Possibly, look and know.
There is little I can do to help.

The False Choice of Deaths V.S. The Economy
There is a vast amount of hand-writing and angst going on about how we can
either save the economy by re-opening, or we can let the economy crash and
save lives. Of course, the economy crashing (and the US unemployment rate
will probably hit 30%) will cause the loss of lives also. This is a […]
Ian Welsh takes a cynical view.
Unfortunately it is not mistaken.

How the Occupy Democrats Facebook Page Is Beating Trump’s Team
Occupy Democrats, a Facebook page that Rafael and Omar Rivero started eight

If Democrats Hold a Big Convention, Will Anybody Come?
The Times interviewed 59 delegates who will help nominate Joe Biden. Most
said they don’t want to risk their own health, or the health of others, by
attending a full-scale convention in Milwaukee.
A mass rally in virtual space would be a truely new thing.
Time is short to design such a thing.
Speakers need the feedback of the crowd.

Were the Supreme Court’s Phone Arguments a Success?
“I see so many flaws in it,” said Lyle Denniston, the dean emeritus of the
Supreme Court press corps, who has attended more arguments than any other

Passed By for Decades, Clarence Thomas Is a New Symbol of the Trump Era
He isn’t yet the pop culture star that Ruth Bader Ginsburg — “Notorious

The Constitution is a living body of law.
It is not fixed by the meanings of the original framers.
It is modified and interpreted as conditions require.

"Ongoing slow decline. We’re reading lots of noise about irregularities
in reporting deaths in GA and FL. Tamping down cases is easy – just
restrict testing. The reporting of deaths is evidently also being
changed in a number of states to the reporting day by the local medical
examiner or health official, not to the actual death. CO, GA, and FL,
among others are now doing this. The net effect is simply to create a
temporary reduction in the number of deaths for a period of time until
they catch up again. It appears that this can be up to a several week
lag, which is what a lot of the states want to create the optics for
opening up."
