Fearing Political Peril, Republicans Edge Away From Trump on Pandemic Response
Moderate Republicans in competitive districts are navigating a careful
balance in addressing the coronavirus crisis, eager to put some distance
between themselves and a president whose response has been criticized.
Some Republicans can see further into a millstone than others.
"Government of the people, for the people, by the people shall not perish from the earth."

9/11 Prisoners May Get Video Chats to Bridge the Coronavirus Divide
With the Sept. 11 hearings delayed, prosecutors and defenders are looking
for ways to let lawyers talk with the prisoners at Guantánamo Bay.
Holding these torture victims is a war crime.

Trump Moves to Replace Watchdog Who Identified Critical Medical Shortages
The president announced the nomination of an inspector general for the
Department of Health and Human Services, who, if confirmed, would replace
an acting official whose report embarrassed Mr. Trump.
Sweeping embarrassment "under the rug"or "under the bus" only makes it messy.

Native American Tribes Sue Over Coronavirus Stimulus Aid
A dispute among native populations over $8 billion in federal coronavirus
relief has delayed aid to tribes that are among the hardest-hit by Covid-19.
The tribes are entitled.
The tribes have fought among themselves since they formed.
The Gaming concessions have enabled the tribes to have lawyers.
The courts are much cheaper than war.
"A group of Native American tribes is suing the Treasury Department for
failing to provide billions of dollars in coronavirus relief allocated
for tribes in the $2.2 trillion stimulus package, setting off one of the
most significant legal battles between tribal governments and the
United States in years."
The federal government must pay up.

Trump Gets Coronavirus Tests While Senators Wait
As senators prepare to return on Monday, Congress’s doctor warned that he
does not have the capacity to test all 100 for coronavirus. At the White
House, the president and many of his aides are tested repeatedly.

Sadism is a problem with Trump Republicans.

‘I Will Never Lie to You,’ McEnany Says in First White House Briefing
But Kayleigh McEnany, the president’s fourth press secretary, found that
vow tested almost immediately.
That statement is a lie.
"Discussing the sexual harassment accusation by a former staff member
against Joseph R. Biden Jr., the president’s likely general election
opponent, she said the president had “always told the truth on these
issues,” ignoring Mr. Trump’s evasions and misrepresentations in
responding to dozens of accusations against him. She claimed it was
unfair to bring up issues from “four years ago that were asked and
answered.”"

Some Trump Officials Take Harder Actions on China During Pandemic
Since the coronavirus spread from a metropolis on the Yangtze River across
the globe, hard-liners in both Washington and Beijing have accelerated
efforts to decouple elements of the relationship.
A great deal of capital must be raised to re-industrialize the U.S.
Joe McCarthy "lost" China.

Barr Defends Response to Virus in Stormy Twitter Session
Given a chance to ask questions of the attorney general, many users opted
for insults or accusations.
There is no way on twitter to insist on an answer much less a reasoned response.

The Best Part of the Campaign Trail (the Food!) Comes Home
By ordering in, a political reporter continues to enjoy his favorite dishes
from around the country.
Food is different in different places.
It is a pleasure.
Much of it ships by air, truck, and bicycle.
The delay is only hours from door to door.

It’s Impossible to Overstate How Broken America Is
I know I’ve been pounding this issue, but… New: The Capitol physician told
Republican staffers today the Senate lacks the capacity to test all 100
senators when it comes back Monday. Instead the Senate will test people who
are sick. Test will take 2+ days. Come on!! They can’t even manage proper
testing for 100 […]
I wish it was not true.

An Accidental Navy Chief Steers His Service Through a Storm
Adm. Michael M. Gilday appears determined that his recommendations on the
Roosevelt case will be made based on Navy principles and not on fears of
what the White House might want.
The U.S. Navy runs the Navy.
It often has operated without civil supervision.

Biden Denies Tara Reade’s Assault Allegation: ‘It Never Happened’
Joseph R. Biden Jr., in his first public address of a former Senate aide’s
accusation that he sexually assaulted her in 1993, called on the National
Archives to release any document related to the allegation.
If no evidence is found the matter is moot.

Scrambling the Political Divide: ‘No Normal Recession’
When a Republican senator shops a stimulus plan that has more common ground
with a leading progressive.
Some Republicans try to think.
They have not succeeded.

Democrats Assail Mitch McConnell for Bringing Senate Back Amid Pandemic
The majority leader’s plan to reconvene next week carries dangers for
lawmakers as well as workers at the Capitol, where many low-level employees
are minorities and at greater risk from Covid-19.
