Abortion Is Found to Have Little Effect on Women’s Mental Health

A study, published in JAMA Psychiatry, undermines the claim that women seeking abortions might develop emotional and psychological trauma.

"Another intriguing finding was that women receiving first-trimester abortions were no more or less affected than those ending pregnancies later. “People guessed that it would be more difficult to their mental health to have a later abortion procedure than to have an earlier abortion procedure, and we didn’t find that,” Dr. Biggs said.
Dr. Biggs said the study suggested that “expanding access to abortion care is more likely to protect women’s mental health than restricting women’s access to abortion care,” but she also noted some results that “might not be very pro-choicy.” Those included that none of the groups differed in experiencing depression, and that women denied abortions did not have “more long-term negative mental health consequences.”"

Things can be known.

John Kasich Signs One Abortion Bill in Ohio but Vetoes a More Restrictive Measure

The governor signed a ban on abortion after 20 weeks, but vetoed a measure that would have barred abortions after a fetal heartbeat was detected.

A child should never be an affliction.

Loath to Meddle in Election, Obama Delayed Blaming Russia for D.N.C. Hack

The administration was concerned that any statement by President Obama would be viewed as politicizing intelligence, the White House said.

The point is journalism has not been doing its job.
It is charged with the discovery and publication of the social and physical universe.
Journalism is a public intelligence organization.
The public has been suffering from a dearth of intelligence.
Advertising is charged only with commerce.

One in 6 American Adults Say They Have Taken Psychiatric Drugs, Report Says

The new analysis provides the most fine-grained snapshot of prescription drug use for psychological and sleep problems to date.

I have no prescriptions.
16% or 32% of the population with prescription coverage is a big number.
150,000,000 X .32 = 48,000,000
About as many as voted for Trump.

Women’s March and Bikers for Trump Claim Inaugural Demonstration Spots

At least 20 groups — an apparent record — are seeking permits to assemble during the week Donald J. Trump takes the oath of office in January.

A riot on inauguration day will not help.
Medical attention will be required.

Rise in Infant Drug Dependence Is Felt Most in Rural Areas

Many more pregnant women are abusing opioids, a new report suggests, putting a strain on hospital neonatal units.

"Several experts said that focusing on the babies alone is shortsighted: To stem the rise in infant addiction, they noted, it is critical to treat the mothers’ opioid abuse.
“One has to appreciate that behind every incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome, which is relatively easy to recognize and relatively easy to treat,” Dr. Johnston said, “there’s a case of a mother dependent on opioids, and that’s complex to treat.”"

Mothers can seek out opioids.  Infants cannot seek drugs.
There is no cure for addiction.
When does an habituated infant begin to seek drugs?

G.O.P. Resistance Builds to John Bolton as State Dept. Deputy

The president-elect’s efforts to assemble a diplomatic team are reviving the same debates that consumed the administration of George W. Bush.

I will have to wait for a deputy to be nominated.
I will be surprised if it is John Bolton.

Extensive Brain Defects Seen in Babies of Mothers With Zika

Damage may be present even in the absence of obvious abnormalities like small heads, and the virus may go on replicating in babies’ brains well after birth, studies found.

"The virus was also found in the placentas of mothers whose babies appeared healthy at birth and came up negative on both types of Zika test.
That suggests that all infants whose mothers have had Zika should be monitored after birth, Dr. Ko said."

"Another recent study found that some babies born small-headed but not microcephalic went on to meet the definition of microcephaly later because their heads stopped growing after birth, suggesting that damage was continuing."

New York City’s Child Welfare Commissioner, Gladys Carrión, Resigns

Ms. Carrión’s departure comes after a succession of child deaths and at a time when the agency is enduring criticism and the exits of other leaders.

My guess is that she was driven from office for being the wrong color.
Child welfare is under funded and understaffed.
Her budget was not her responsibility.

Rolling Back Abortion Rights After Donald Trump’s Election

A 20-week ban in Ohio may be a sign of things to come.

The threat of an effective ban exists.
I see no good way to change closed minds.

I would not like to see forced adoption of the very premature by abortion opponents.
