Keeping the Electricity Grid One Step Ahead of the Storm

A senior preparedness administrator for Baltimore Gas & Electric plans out how to get the lights back on after wind, snow, rain and ice have done their worst.

A different kind of emergency management.

Trump to Accept Inauguration Funds From Corporations and Big Donors

The move represents a continued march back from standards set in 2009 and complicates the president-elect’s pledge to eliminate influence from special interests.

The party should be at the beginning.

  1. At the same time, hard right will be furious if it *doesn't* happen. How will Trump resolve this dilemma? 5/
  2. You can ask Trumpists what they were thinking when they voted for these people, but they will feel betrayed if any of this happens 4/
  3. Meanwhile, Ryanesque promises of Medicare reform may impress credulous journos, but will infuriate much of the country if put into effect 3/
  4. Now they confront reality that all elements of ACA are essential; take away subsidies or mandate and tens of millions lose coverage 2/
  5. On health care, Republicans have lost the luxury of irresponsibility. Before, they could denounce O'care and promise to replace 1/

A Tiny Home That Floats

About 30 people live year-round on their boats at the 79th Street Boat Basin.

I am not so decrepit.
I would rather not pay the boat upkeep.

Studio space is the problem.   Salt water is not kind to high carbon steel.

The Farmers We Forgot

No one really pandered to them. Does that mean no one cares?

If the poor everywhere are equally desperate they will not wander.

It is a future I have no desire to see.

How Ben Carson at Housing Could Undo a Desegregation Effort

A long-debated rule to carry out a neglected provision of the 1968 Fair Housing Act faces an uncertain future.

Republican policy is for government to take no active role in desegregation.
The poor will be blamed for their poverty.

No Extra Pay for Extra Work

An outdated salary threshold in a law has left many employees without overtime, but a judge has blocked rules that would have fixed the problem.

" The problem is that the $455-a-week threshold at which workers qualify for white-collar status has not been fully updated for inflation since 1975. As a result, the share of the work force eligible for overtime has dropped, from about 60 percent in 1975 to 7 percent today.
The updated rules the judge blocked would have raised the threshold to $913 a week, about where it would have been if it had kept pace with inflation. In all, about one-third of salaried employees would have been eligible for overtime under the new threshold."

Hope is fading.

Justin Trudeau Faces Criticism Over Fund-Raisers in Canada

A series of articles in a Toronto newspaper have raised questions of whether donors get privileged access to members of Mr. Trudeau’s cabinet.

It looks like e-mails to me.
