My Wife Wants to Adopt. When Do I Tell Her I Won’t?

The magazine’s Ethicist columnist on when going along with your spouse is a gross deception, whether a child should know the real cause of his father’s death and when paying back a debt creates a greater burden than it lifts.

"You must know that what you’re doing is horribly manipulative and disrespectful. It’s a fine piece of folk wisdom that nobody really knows what’s going on in someone else’s marriage, but I would be seriously worried about the prospects of a relationship centered on an unreconciled difference this deep."

I worry about the time available.

I have met a number of trust-fund children.
I had no desire to continue to know them.

Raising a child with you would please me.
Abandoning that child a second time would not please me.

It probably should not.
