De Blasio’s Investigations Chief Recuses Himself From Fund-Raising Inquiry

The move by Commissioner Mark G. Peters, who served as campaign treasurer for Mayor Bill de Blasio in the 2013 race, was an abrupt turnaround.

"The commissioner, Mark G. Peters, a longtime friend of Mr. de Blasio’s who served as the treasurer for his 2013 campaign, made the move “in order to avoid the appearance of a conflict” in connection with the inquiry, according to a two-sentence statement from the agency"

The Republicans are "on the warpath".

How Many Eggs Does a Chicken Lay in Its Lifetime?

Rough estimates for the first two or three years of laying, when a hen is most highly productive, suggest figures in the high hundreds.

"Commercial flocks are often culled when hens stop laying or taper off sharply. This may be as soon as the end of the first year."

"One authoritative survey, issued regularly by the Department of Agriculture based on commercial operations, puts the most recent United States figure at 276 eggs a year."

Poultry is not a gentle business.

A 52-year-old man died in the St. Albans neighborhood and a second person in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, where nine other people received minor injuries.

There were fires.  Residents died.
There is no news in this story yet.
Unusual numbers of firemen got hurt.

Jahmal Lightfoot testified for a second day about the pummeling he received at the trial of nine current and former Rikers officers.

The occupants of Riker's Island are not yet convicted.
They are not guilty under the presumption of innocence.

T’s New Culture Issue: Past Is Present

For something to be “in fashion,” it needs to be of the times, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t also be kept and treasured for a lifetime.

Things are fashionable because the arbiters of fashion name them fashionable.

A New Dark Age Looms

As Earth warms, nature’s reliable patterns will be disrupted, casting humanity into a new dark age.

No!

We are committed  to warming and climate change.
We are not committed to a collapse of scientific understanding of the planet and our economy.
The four horsemen will arrive and things will be different.  There will be little new or incomprehensible.

How a $15 Wage Affects the Poor

An economist says raising the minimum wage could have some negative effects.

Robert Cherry is wrong.  Chasing benefits is a full time job.
Substituting one full time job for another is no loss.
The employment prospects of the uneducated were never good.
The jobs they can get will pay better.  The supply of low skill work is inelastic on price.

The arrest of the man, a member of a volunteer security force, appears to be the first to materialize from an inquiry into police corruption and Mayor Bill de Blasio’s campaign fund-raising.
