Is Disability Pay Hampering Veterans’ Future?
Paralyzed Veterans of America and a psychiatrist who has consulted in veterans’ hospitals respond to a front-page article.
"As
a psychiatrist who has consulted on psychiatric wards in veterans’
hospitals, I can state that the system is pernicious. It pays veterans
to stay sick and punishes them for getting well enough to work. The
veteran who gets healthy enough to work loses benefits.
There
is a simple fix for this problem. Continue to pay benefits to disabled
veterans who return to work. It won’t cost any more than the current
system. It will provide these men and women with motivation to become
more productive citizens, and it will honor our commitment to these
brave men and women, who have served our country well.
