New Jersey Panel Argues That Figures in Bridge Scandal Must Obey Subpoenas

Two aides to Gov. Chris Christie have refused to turn over documents related to the George Washington Bridge lane closings, saying it would violate their Fifth Amendment rights.
George Washington Bridge; Subpoenas

"Mr. Critchley hinted that Ms. Kelly would testify if the committee offered her protection against prosecution.
“What they could do to get around these issues, they could just give us immunity,” he told the judge.
“They don’t want to give us immunity,” he argued, because that would interfere with a separate federal investigation of the lane closings, by United States Attorney Paul J. Fishman.
Mr. Schar told the judge that it was not clear that the special committee, as created, had the power to grant immunity for documents, though it might for oral testimony.
Judge Jacobson asked him for a brief by Monday on its argument about granting immunity.
Lawyers for Ms. Kelly and Mr. Stepien will then have until March 25 to file a response."
