In South Africa’s Fabled Wine Country, White and Black Battle Over Land

A generation after apartheid, the Stellenbosch region is gripped by a struggle that pits white citizens who still control much of the economy against their black neighbors.

Their courts must decide.

A Coffee Shop Pioneer Was Murdered. 23 Years Later, His Wife and Her Brother Are Guilty.

The verdict in the cold case was a victory for the Manhattan district attorney’s office, whose prosecutors built a case on largely circumstantial evidence.

I don't know enough to tell another story.
DNA evidence has become more trustworthy over the interveining years.

In ‘The Uninhabitable Earth,’ Apocalypse Is Now

David Wallace-Wells’s book, expanding on his viral article in New York magazine, is a lushly written look at the “climate chaos” that will increasingly take over our lives.

The Uninhabitable Earth points out humanity is in an existential crisis.  I can argue with the details.  The oncoming crisis is obvious.
David Wallace-Wells knows that hope can motivate change.  He paints a survival
scenario.

Contingency planning is necessary.
I have a paranoid fantasy that Donald Trump is the result of contingency planning.

The most successful economic system shouldn’t be a dirty word.

Capitalism is not a dirty word.
Capitalism is not a government.
Capitalism is authoritarian.
Governments are by definition socialist and ultimately democratic.

Well, that was unimpressive. It's probably mainly statistical noise/temporary effects of shutdown. But it fits with nowcasting estimates showing a very soft patch in the economy. Trump boom, such as it was, RIP

Is This the Greatest Photo in Jazz History?

A quiet Sunday night in 1953. The Dodgers had just won the pennant. J.F.K. and Jacqueline Bouvier had just married. And four titans of bebop came together in a dive bar for a rare jam session.

Jazz history is not over.
