Doing volume control in software is a petter way.
doing it with a potentiometer is next best.
Analog leaves the choice to the child.
Software allows thelow intensity parts to remain audible
while the high intensity bits do not cause permanent damage.

Nothing is fool proof.  Fools are too clever.
