What We’re Losing in James Comey

He was a man who could stand up to power and tell the truth — and that scared President Trump.

I am not sorry James Comey is out of government.
I suspect that he is just as wonderful as Benjamin Wittes
depicts him.
His management made the national police force the F.B.I. has become tolerable.  The federal government needs a domestic intelligence service beyond the free press.  That service should not have police powers.  If those powers are required the individual states can provide them.

Is It Possible There Is Nothing Nice to Say?

An arbitrary sense of “balance” isn’t good, but unbalanced coverage ought to give pause.

It is quite possible there is nothing nice to say
about Donald Trump.
The Republican Congress nearly matches him.

Is President Trump Obstructing Justice?

His entire pattern of behavior is obstruction of the rule of law and democratic norms.

Probably Trump is obstructing justice.
The moderate Republicans have a record of voting at their parties call.

Video: National Monuments in the Crosshairs

President Trump ordered an unprecedented review in April that could open federally protected lands to mining, logging and drilling.

I should not need to trust an administration that has proven itself hostile to the general interest.

Donald Trump Does Not Surprise

The president is unfit for office, but we knew that already.

Ross Douthat does surprise.

Burr Feels Weight of Role Investigating Trump and Russia

Richard M. Burr, the unobtrusive chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, is moving into a spotlight he never expected and does not seem to relish.

"“He said, ‘I hope they don’t put me on the Intelligence Committee,’” recalled Paul Shumaker, a top strategist for Mr. Burr who sat with him to follow the returns. “‘It’s hard enough to sleep at night the way it is.’”"

Burr should not have that weight.
The Senate committees do not have prosecutorial powers.

Allan H. Meltzer, Conservative Economist, Dies at 89

He was an opponent of government bailouts who was credited with coining the phrase, “Capitalism without failure is like religion without sin.”

A long and honored career does not make his opinions correct.
"Science advances one funeral at a time."

The former leader of the country’s largest sheriff’s department, Mr. Baca was convicted in March of obstructing a federal investigation into the county’s troubled jails.

Dangerous Window Boxes

Many New Yorkers hang flower pots or other planting containers from their windowsills, but is that legal — or safe?

Outside equipment must be properly secured.

Enforcing a ban would be much resisted.

The Case for Laughing at President Trump

Sometimes, laughter is just a recognition of the way things are.

Laughing at Trump is not a crime.
It is not even wrong.
I find it difficult to laugh at danger.
