What to Cook This Weekend

Margaritas and avocado tacos for Cinco de Mayo, mint juleps and pie for the Kentucky Derby: It’s a weekend full of celebratory food.

I am ready to go to a vegetable based diet.
Food is not a central concern at the moment.

Food

Eat Your Vegetables

Light spring soups, an asparagus-scallion salad and Mark Bittman’s eggplant Parmesan are just a few ways to observe a meatless Monday.

Bread and cheese is my default diet.
Add coffee and it is two thirds of the day.
Too often it is pizza.

Fight Brews Over Push to Shield Americans in Warrantless Surveillance

Privacy-minded lawmakers in Congress look to limit the N.S.A.’s use of information about Americans that it incidentally collects while spying on foreigners.

Surveillance of individuals and records is unconstitutional.

Government must find probable cause and get a warrant from the criminal courts.
Secret Police are an abuse the founders tried to prevent.
There is no willingness in government to follow these rules.
An attempt in the federal courts to enforce the constitutional ban would probably be counterproductive.
I am frustrated.  I try to ignore my frustration.

An Alfredo Sauce Straight From the Source

A new pasta sauce for fettuccine Alfredo is based on the original recipe from Rome.

The formula on the box is probably proper.
Fetuchini Alfredo was the dinner when it was composed in Rome in 1914.
People are better fed without an existential war.

The Story was Fine, the Headline Less So

Readers were quick to point out that a headline fell short in conveying the potential impact of the Republican health care bill.

Try:

"Life: an Uninsurable Preexisting Condition"

Senate Asks Trump Associates for Records of Communication With Russians

The step by the Senate Intelligence Committee in its investigation into Russian election meddling may be a way to open a path to subpoenas if needed.

Perhaps there are witches to hunt.

The action is a good one.
Most of the motivation is horrible.

Conquering Machu Picchu, the Cheap and Quick Way

A visit to the 15th-century Incan estate as a day trip from Cuzco requires extra preparation, but you can do it, unrushed.

The Inca are fascinating to me.
I have no need to tour Machu Picchu.
I would like to spend time with the culture and the mountains.

Mine is not a conquest.

In a Law Office, Coping With a Boss’s Toxic Trail

She worked for a powerful lawyer who could be charming when he chose, but who also inspired dread.

Managing my managers is a continuing problem.
I am not skilled.
My advice is sure to be bad.

Tundra May Be Shifting Alaska to Put Out More Carbon Than It Stores, Study Says

Researchers focused on warmer weather that keeps the tundra from freezing until later, allowing processes that release carbon dioxide to continue longer.

Let the scientific work continue.
It is not clear to me how the carbon balance will run.
The carbon storing mechanism will also run longer.
Peat is perhaps less formed in the high arctic.

Noisy Construction in the Building

A neighbor’s renovation is making our lives miserable and the co-op board won’t do anything.

Living in a shared space is not easy.

Good communication helps.

Limiting the hours for high noise is possible.
The distant suburbs can be quieter.
