What to Cook This Week

Valentine’s Day is on Tuesday, but maybe you could — and should — skip the reservation this year.

Sooner is better.   As soon as you can is best.

The job looks perfect: Sample candy, chocolate and cookies for pay. But Mondelez, which wants to fill two positions, says the work is harder than it appears.

Yes.   I could not do it.
My palate does not clear easily.

Arrest in Jogger’s Murder Doesn’t Alter Push for Family DNA Searches

Advocates of allowing a broader use of offender databases, who had argued that it might help solve the Karina Vetrano case, will press on. A hearing is set for Friday.

The police are very fearful the guilty will escape punishment.
I am opposed to enforced "good" behavior.
The police must get a warrant.

Stanford Drops Lawyer Who Advised Students in Sexual Assault Cases

The lawyer, Crystal Riggins, one of six the university has had on retainer for such cases, spoke out against the process for handling them.

Politics and justice do not mix comfortably or gracefully.
Crystal Riggins is probably correct.

NBC is in discussions to revive the singing competition show that produced huge ratings for Fox.

NBC is displaying bad judgement.

Tom Price Is Confirmed as Health Secretary

The Senate approved Mr. Price to be secretary of health and human services, where he will lead President Trump’s efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act.

The Republicans have searched for seven years for an end to the A.C.A. that would allow them to survive.  They have not found a way.  That should not change.

Addiction Treatment Grew Under Health Law. Now What?

Seeing progress in the fight against the nation’s opioid epidemic, many providers are frustrated that the Affordable Care Act may be dismantled.

Addiction treatment will continue and grow.
The health care law will continue and grow.

The dead will fill the streets if they do not.

Do You Need to Worry About Trump’s Reforms? It Depends

The president pledged to do “a big number” on the Dodd-Frank Act. If, instead, lawmakers propose only some basic fixes, don’t despair.

I do not trust the Trump administration or the Republican majorities.
I agree it is not yet Time to panic.
It is time to get or update passports and visas.

Fed Official’s Departure to Leave 3 Vacant Seats on Board

Daniel K. Tarullo, who has led financial regulation efforts, said on Friday that he would resign, giving President Trump an immediate opportunity to reshape the central bank.

Republican changes at the federal reserve are not good news.

My retirement income plan is firming.

Why You Should Get Around to Drawing Up a Will

Many Americans don’t have wills, but should. You can do it yourself online, but consulting a lawyer is often a safer bet.

I need a will.  I need to discuss details.

De Blasio and Stringer Trade Barbs Over Police Body Camera Deal

On a day when he could have been enjoying the city’s smooth response to the year’s first big snowstorm, Mayor Bill de Blasio instead picked a fight with the city comptroller, Scott M. Stringer.

Review: ‘The Dark Side of the Sun,’ and, by the Way, We’re Doomed

This documentary on the Science Channel reminds us about the inevitable catastrophe we will face the next time there are huge solar winds.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_Who_Cried_Wolf

There are a number of possible world ending events.
I do not expect to survive any of these possible events.
I see no point in worrying about them except if there are measures that will mitigate them.
A solar flare will give nine minutes warning.
A caldera explosion will give a few years warning.
The same with a comet strike.
Global Warming gives us fifty years if we take action now.
