Has Murder Come to Town? This Heart Tells No Tales

So far, anyway. The police and coroner have no leads about a heart found in a plastic bag near a gas station last month in Norwalk, Ohio.

Early days.

Is it human?

Is it fresh?

Is it professionally excised?

Cause of death?

Age at death?

Sex?

Disease?

DNA?

Chemistry/toxicology?

I will think of more questions

Helping Patients Make the Right Decisions

We must do a better job of guiding patients through the subtle, sometimes counterintuitive, trade-offs inherent in the tests and treatments we propose.

Often the optimum path is to do nothing as yet.
A reexamination in a few months or weeks will show a clearer result.

Birth Control Continues to Bedevil the Supreme Court

The court seeks a compromise on how to provide birth control coverage to women at nonprofit religious-oriented charities and religious colleges.

Insurance should provide contraception on demand.
Demand is personal choice and may be regulated by religion.
Free will demands the supply of contraception exist as a part of health insurance.
For the predestined the matter is moot.

Musings on the Toilet

As bathroom trends come and go, our design editor keeps returning to the Edwardian ideal.

OK.
I want white or light porcelain,  Unglazed where feet contact it. Glazed where it is soapy or otherwise fouled.
Bottom heat in the floor and the tub.  A heated towel bar.  A window that opens and is not in a line of sight.  Mixing valves with minimal exposed metal, 300 series stainless steel grab rails and other exposed hardware and rubber drain plugs. Storage with doors that close.
The outlet should be always on, the light on simple switches.
Clean, warm and mostly dry.

Polishing Financial Results Looks Good, but Can Lead to Fraud

Cases involving American Realty Capital Partners and Fiat Chrysler show how manipulating reported results can end up misleading investors.

Read the annual report and look at the price graph before you put your money down.
Cheap stocks require special care.  Mergers and acquisitions are usually not good.
A buyback feels good but is not a healthy sign.
It is best to know the product.

SUNY to Stop Asking Applicants About Felony Convictions

The vote comes amid a growing movement to have universities cease inquiring about criminal histories when students apply, a practice many say hurts black applicants disproportionately.

I will watch the statistics.  It is probably meaningless.

Pregnant Women Anxious as Florida’s Zika Test Results Take Weeks

The state offers free tests to pregnant women, but a lack of resources has contributed to a backlog that has left hundreds waiting a long time.
