How Much Is Too Much Marijuana to Drive? Lawmakers Wonder

As more states consider legalizing cannabis, legislators are struggling to set laws on impairment because the body absorbs it differently from alcohol.

The problem is marijuana is detectable at lower levels than levels that cause impairment.
The test must be the impairment itself.

We are back to walking the line.

A Humane Revolution

Animal rights activists are winning gains by working with corporations to change behavior and supply lines.

Reducing fossil carbon use must continue to dominate.
Humane treatment must get its triumphs without support from fossil carbon.

One Neighborhood at a Time

Healing the social fabric is complex, but communities like Lost Hills, Calif., are beacons of hope.

Lost Hills was a migrant camp that became a company town.
If the nut orchards go it will be a ghost town.

Utopian communities can last as much as one generation.
They have problems with the transfer of leadership.

Plastic Bags in the Grand Canyon

A New York City plan to charge for shopping bags brings to a reader’s mind the image of bags littering the Grand Canyon.

Put a deposit on the bags rather than a sale price.
The bags become worth turning in and an income stream for scavengers.

The Vaquita, the World’s Smallest Porpoise, Slips Closer to Extinction

Scientists say only about 60 are left in the Gulf of California, threatened by nets that fishermen illegally use to catch totoaba, a source of a Chinese delicacy.

New Priority Means Fewer Beds in City’s Shelters

Federal officials have shifted money to favor permanent housing, but New York City also needs transitional shelters.

The supply of homeless exceeds the supply of quarters for them.
"Permanent housing" is equivalent to shelter beds.
It has the bonus of reducing the demand for shelter beds temporarily.

Scientists Hold Secret Meeting to Consider Creating a Synthetic Human Genome

The project poses ethical issues about whether humans could be created without parents.

I do not find the thought upsetting.
There are many who will.
Secrecy seems a good idea.

The zygote without parents is as potentially as human as any other.
It will have a mother.
It will need love and parenting.
The Skinner Box is not under consideration again.

Managing Pain and Opioid Addiction

Doctors and patients discuss the conundrum.

All use of opioids is addictive.
For terminal patients it matters not at all.
For less than terminal patients it is a judgment call.
Is the pain relief worth the addiction.

Addicts can kick.  Most do not.
An addict "in recovery" remains an addict.

The Crippled Supreme Court

The eight justices have again declined to rule on a major legal issue. They cannot do their job without a full bench.

The court requires a majority interested in effective government.
This probably an odd number of sitting justices.
The Republicans must not win in November.

When Appointing Friends of Court, Justices Are Friendliest Toward White Men

A study of the Supreme Court’s practice of calling in extra lawyers revealed a sort of patronage system that rewarded few women or minorities.

First be a "friend of the court".
