Maintenance Work to Disrupt Washington, D.C., Metro for a Year

The transit agency says the ambitious project to clear a backlog of deferred maintenance will mean sparser service, earlier closings and some station shutdowns.

The price of housing in the impaired areas will not fall.
Service will eventually return to what was normal.
There is an opportunity to extend and improve service.
That is not expected to be taken.

Washington’s Metro

A reader writes that the system’s leadership “must completely overhaul its infrastructure and drastically improve the safety practices.”

Maintenance of the system must not be deferred.
It is a false economy.

Michigan Man Charged With Sprinkling Poison on Food at Stores

Kyle Andrew Bessemer, 29, of Ann Arbor was arraigned on four felony counts after a combination of mouse poison and hand sanitizer was sprayed on produce.

His motive would be interesting.

Where Can a Ph.D. Take You? Back to School, Usually

Research on doctoral students at 39 universities found that most used their Ph.D.s to pursue postdoc research. But this may require further study.

This Was a (Mildly) Disappointing Jobs Report

For the Federal Reserve, presidential candidates and the American people alike, a result that cuts two ways.

The Opioid Epidemic We Failed to Foresee

The notion that patients would not become addicted to opioids has proved to be one of the biggest mistakes in modern medicine.

The pharmaceutical companies published bad data.
To quote my older brother thirty years ago:
"When you put that needle in your arm you are a sick man."

Get Ready for Higher Obamacare Rates Next Year

Prices seem likely to rise, for a number of reasons. But don’t assume it means the Affordable Care Act is a failure.

The claim is that the formerly uninsured are sicker than expected.
There are fewer uninsured presenting themselves at emergency rooms.
Statisticians knew the health of the newly insured.
The claim is false.
Hospitals know their costs.
Another false claim.
The Republican party wants to see much higher rates.
True. Rates have generally fallen because of the larger pool size.
