" According to Social Media Today, in April 2010 an estimated 41.6% of the U.S. population had a Facebook account.[12] Nevertheless, Facebook's market growth started to stall in some regions, with the site losing 7 million active users in the United States and Canada in May 2011.[13] Facebook filed for an initial public offering on February 1, 2012.[14]

"Since April 2011 Facebook users have had the ability to make live voice calls via Facebook Chat, allowing users to chat with others from all over the world. This feature, which is provided free through T-Mobile's new Bobsled service, lets the user add voice to the current Facebook Chat as well as leave voice messages on Facebook.[93]
On July 6, 2011, Facebook launched its video calling services using Skype as its technology partner. It allows one to one calling using a Skype Rest API.[94]
On September 14, 2011, Facebook launched a Subscribe button. The feature allows for users to follow public updates, and these are the people most often broadcasting their ideas.[95] There were major modifications that the site released on September 22, 2011.[96]
As reported by TechCrunch on February 15th 2012, Facebook is introducing ‘Verified Account’ concept like that of Twitter & Google+. Though as of 3rd March 2012, verified accounts don’t get any badges or denotations, but such accounts will get more priority in ‘Subscription Suggestions’ of Facebook. [97]
on March 6, 2012, Facebook officially launched its Messenger for Windows.[98]
Privacy
According to comScore, an internet marketing research company, Facebook collects as much data from its visitors as Google and Microsoft, but considerably less than Yahoo!.[99] In 2010, the security team began expanding its efforts to reduce the risks to users' privacy,[100] but privacy concerns remain. On November 6, 2007, Facebook launched Facebook Beacon, which was an ultimately failed attempt to advertise to friends of users using the knowledge of what purchases friends made. As of March 2012, Facebook's usage of its user data is under close scrutiny. [101]
FTC settlement
On November 29, 2011, Facebook agreed to settle US Federal Trade Commission charges that it deceived consumers by failing to keep privacy promises.[102]

"Privacy, Schmivacy: Facebook Is Attracting Near-Record Numbers Of New Visitors
Despite all the recent hand-wringing about Facebook’s privacy failures and the company’s attempts to simplify privacy controls in response to the uproar over the past month and a half, there has been no visible impact on Facebook itself. In fact, the month of May was one of the strongest ones ever for Facebook, as measured by net new visitors.
According to comScore, Facebook attracted 130 million unique U.S. visitors in May, 2010, an increase of 8.6 million people. That jump represents the third largest single-month increase in unique visitors since comScore started measuring. Pageviews were up 11 percent in May to 55.5 billion.
Maybe all of those people were flocking to Facebook to change their privacy settings. Or maybe all of those Like buttons and other social plugins spreading all over the Web are increasing sharing and driving more traffic back to Facebook. More than 100,000 sites have installed Facebook’s social plugins.
So, yes, Facebook is pushing its culture of oversharing across the Web and that does raise serious privacy concerns. But are people quitting Facebook over the privacy issue? The data suggests the opposite. They are relying on Facebook even more than before."

After the changes were introduced, every time Facebook users added pictures, comments or other content to their profile pages, they could specify who could see it: all of their Facebook friends, a specific group of friends or everyone who has access to the Internet. Icons indicating this replaced the former, more complicated padlock menu. Similar controls were applied to information on users’ profile pages.
In December 2011, Facebook started rolling out a revamped profile design called Timeline that makes a user’s entire history of photos, links and other things shared on the site much more accessible with a single click. That could be when many of Facebook’s 800 million members realized just how many digital breadcrumbs they had been leaving on the site — and on the Web in general.
The old Facebook profile page showed the most recent items a user posted, along with things like photos of them posted by others. But Timeline creates a scrapbook-like montage, assembling photos, links and updates for each month and year since they signed up for Facebook.
For better or worse, the new format is likely to bring back old memories. Going forward, it could also make it harder to shed past identities — something that people growing up with Facebook might struggle with as they transition from high school to college, and from there to the working world.
Analysts said Timeline was a significant evolutionary shift for Facebook. For starters, linking Facebook more closely to memories could make it harder for people to abandon the service for rivals."
