Who Can Mock This Church?
JUBA, Sudan
"It’s because of brave souls like these that I honor the Catholic Church. I understand why many Americans disdain a church whose leaders are linked to cover-ups and antediluvian stances on women, gays and condoms — but the Catholic Church is far larger than the Vatican."
Unfortunately the Vatican differs. Orthodoxy is demanded by the Roman Church. Differing from Rome is heresy and will be suppressed if recognised. Good works will get the "Telescope to the blind eye". This is sufferance not tolerance.
Readers weigh in on my column about heroic church work in Sudan
People of all walks of life and of all faiths do good work, including secular humanists and "non-believers." Priest and nuns doing good work are such an example; people doing good work. This does not justify the obvious facts that the Catholic religion continues to teach and promote many damaging ideas, such as patriarchy in which men have a god given right to have more power in the leadership of the Catholic Church. Recently, the Church has covered up years of sexual abuse of children, but before that there were other horrors such as the witch hunts in which over 60,000 women were put to death after being determined to be full of evil by Church clergy. The modern Catholic Church fights against groups such as Planned Parenthood as they struggle to offer birth control and affordable abortion to needy women. Hopefully, we can separate the institution from its members. The Catholic Church continues to be an extremely oppressive institution even as some of its members do good work.
Krugman must know that youth does not come again. I will be happy with attention.
