Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court raises an interesting question: When does a woman go from being single to unmarried?

Unmarried includes single. It also includes no longer married with dependent, divorced with children or widowed with children or never married with children

natural or adopted. Abandoned wives? Participants in polygamy? What is a Nun in the eyes of the law?
