Jennifer Steinhauer at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 hour ago
Facing shortages, Gov. Larry Hogan and his wife, Yumi Hogan, negotiated with suppliers in South Korea to obtain the kits. “It should not have been this difficult,” he said.

Dispute Over Virus Testing Delays Deal on Aid to Small Businesses and Hospitals

Emily Cochrane at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 3 hours ago
Democrats are insisting that the legislation require the Trump administration to establish a national testing strategy, but the president wants states to take responsibility.

Maybe the federal government will do testing.
I will not bet on it.

Supreme Court Bans Non-Unanimous Jury Verdicts for Serious Crimes

Adam Liptak at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 6 hours ago
The badly fractured decision, affecting defendants in two states, continued a debate among the justices over the power of precedent.

I have not understood the court's internal argument.

The decision seems good.

April 20th US Covid Numbers

Ian Welsh at Ian Welsh - 8 hours ago
In response to the Atlantic article on how limited testing is affecting the Covid-19 statistics, our benefactor writes: Our positivity rates at 20% are extremely high and consistent across time. I suspect that low numbers of new cases in the South are partially a reflection of a lack of testing. If you only have so […]

On Politics: Help for Small Businesses

Giovanni Russonello at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 15 hours ago
A $450 billion bill would include money for hospitals and testing: This is your morning tip sheet.

"But with the virus preventing in-person voting at the Capitol in Washington, the path to passage could be thorny: Congressional leaders will probably do all they can to avoid having to bring back legislators for a vote. That would require unanimous passage of the bill, so any significant disagreements would have to be worked out in the negotiating phase."

The GM ventilators are unusable.  Trump needed a lower price.

April 19th US Covid Update

Ian Welsh at Ian Welsh - 1 day ago
Our benefactor writes: No new news. From other news sources, measurable numbers of deaths are happening at home in other states. No one seems to know if they’re being counted. Jehovah's Witnesses Face the Challenge of the Coronavirus Outbreak

Dionne Searcey at NYT > U.S. > Politics - 1 day ago
The pandemic has put a stop to the activities of one of the nation’s most visible religious groups, Jehovah’s Witnesses.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_James_Version

"James gave the translators instructions intended to ensure that the new version would conform to the ecclesiology of, and reflect the episcopal structure of, the Church of England and its belief in an ordained clergy.[8] The translation was done by 6 panels of translators (47 men in all, most of whom were leading biblical scholars in England) who had the work divided up between them: the Old Testament was entrusted to three panels, the New Testament to two, and the Apocrypha to one.[9] In common with most other translations of the period, the New Testament was translated from Greek, the Old Testament from Hebrew and Aramaic, and the Apocrypha from Greek and Latin. In the Book of Common Prayer (1662), the text of the Authorized Version replaced the text of the Great Bible for Epistle and Gospel readings (but not for the Psalter, which substantially retained Coverdale's Great Bible version), and as such was authorized by Act of Parliament.[10]
