The Obama Presidential Library That Isn’t

The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago won’t include a research library and archive. To some historians, that’s a problem.

Digital records are almost as stable as paper though they often lack the marginalia that is found in physical archives.

How Many Push-Ups Can You Do? It May Be a Good Predictor of Heart Health

Men who could get through 40 or more push-ups had 96 percent less risk of heart problems in the next 10 years than those who quit at 10 or fewer.

Democrats for Family Values

Elizabeth Warren has another very good proposal.

I would be happy to vote for Elizabeth Warren.
I would rather see her in the senate.
I may not get that choice.

The Madness of King Donald

The new BBC production of “King Lear” is great fun — and an uncomfortable reflection of American politics these days.

King Lear is the better choice.

An Alabama Editor Urges the K.K.K. to ‘Ride Again,’ and His Small Town Winces

The editor, Goodloe Sutton, made a name exposing corruption in the 1990s, but his call for the Klan to “go up there and clean out D.C.” has prompted calls for his resignation.

Some do not learn.

Miami Battles Rising Seas

In 2017, voters agreed to finance adaptation efforts through property taxes. Now the first phase of those projects is underway.

The bedrock under Miami is permiable.
Miami is not suitable for poldering.
This is not occaisonal flooding.
The sea will rise and cover south Florida.
The forecasts are conservative.

7 Labour Lawmakers Resign in U.K., in Rebuke of Jeremy Corbyn

The decision reflects the strains that Brexit has placed on a political system dominated by two main parties, each plagued by schisms.

No deal on Brexit is ever more certain.

Not the Fun Kind of Feminist

How Trump helped make Andrea Dworkin relevant again.

Andrea Dworkin never became irrelevant.
She lost the exclusive position she held representing living with hostility toward sexuality.
Hers is an extreme position.
Trump drives people toward extremes.

At Wisconsin High School, Accusations of Body Shaming at a Cheerleading Banquet

Members of a high school cheerleading squad received awards mocking their breasts, backsides and weight, prompting complaints from parents and a warning letter from the A.C.L.U.

Cheerleading is a beauty contest.

It has the same conflicts.

"For the fairest" carries the same burdens
as it did for Homer and his Iliad.

For a Black Mathematician, What It’s Like to Be the ‘Only One’

Fewer than 1 percent of doctorates in math are awarded to African-Americans. Edray Goins, who earned one of them, found the upper reaches of the math world a challenging place.

My guess is a traditionally black university would welcome
him.
It would give him the social position and publication position he needs.
On paper skin color does not show.
He would have students that sought him out.
He would attend conferences as an honored guest rather than as one of the paying audience.
The racism of academia is not central but the constant slights are destructive.

A Real Tube Carrying Dreams of 600-M.P.H. Transit

Virgin Hyperloop One is testing a system that would put passengers in pods hurtling through vacuum tubes. Other companies are moving ahead with similar plans.

I hope they find markets.
Short hop airlines are not practical.
Such a system  would increase the served area of an airport.
I do not see it without the help of the powers of government.

Emmett Till’s Murder, and How America Remembers Its Darkest Moments

He walked into a store and it changed civil rights. That crumbling store has come to symbolize the struggle to address the nation’s racial violence.

The whole story must be remembered.
The buildings are only furniture.
The skills to change culture must be learned and applied.

Bernie Sanders, Once the Progressive Outlier, Joins a Crowded Presidential Field

Mr. Sanders, the runner-up in the 2016 Democratic primaries, is embarking on a bid that will test whether he can retain the anti-establishment appeal he enjoyed with liberals three years ago.

If his thunder has been stolen his life is a triumph.

Bernie Sanders should live as a hero.

After Mr. Stone posted the photo, which depicted the judge overseeing his criminal case, she called a new hearing to reconsider the conditions of his release.

On Paying for a Progressive Agenda

Getting fiscal about policy proposals.

"The answer is, we shouldn’t. Think of all the people who say that the government should be run like a business. Actually it shouldn’t, but the two kinds of institution do have this in common: if you can raise funds cheaply and apply them to high-return projects, you should go ahead and borrow. And Federal borrowing costs are very low – less than 1 percent, adjusted for inflation – while we are desperately in need of public investment, i.e., it has a high social return. So we should just do it, without looking for pay-fors."

"My main point now, however, is that when people ridicule progressive proposals as silly and unaffordable, they’re basically revealing their own biases and ignorance. Investment can and should be debt-financed; benefit enhancements can be largely paid for with high-end taxes. Howard Schultz won’t like it, but that’s his problem."
