For Retirees, a Million-Dollar Illusion

The topsy-turvy world of the markets — particularly the ultralow yield of bonds — is upending what many people thought they knew about saving for retirement.
Retirement; Stocks and Bonds; Interest Rates; High Net Worth Individuals; Savings; Social Security (US); Asset Allocation (Personal Finances); Municipal Bonds; Government Bonds;

The beginning of wisdom.

Who’s Minding the Schools?

Are new standards really leveling the playing field? Or is the game prearranged so that many, if not most, of the players will fail?
Education (K-12); Reading and Writing Skills (Education); Teachers and School Employees; Tests and Examinations;

The schools are not the problem.
The curriculum is the problem.
The students are learning the wrong things according to some.

Want to Fix Social Security? Use the Right Wrench

Switching to a new index for calculating Social Security benefits is a hot topic in Washington. But maybe we should consider a much different benchmark.
United States Economy; Social Security (US); Inflation (Economics); Retirement; Gross Domestic Product; Consumer Price Index;

I distrust Robert J. Shiller and his analysis.
We fixed the baby boom with the trust fund.  He appears not to have noticed that.  The trust fund was designed to end about 2033 as it is predicted to do.  The inflation index is correct as it stands.  We should not fix it.
What we need is a working economy.

In a toy industry increasingly turning to digital gimmicks and movie tie-ins, the Melissa & Doug company has thrived by sticking to the basics.

Prices for that routine procedure, as well as other tests and services, differ radically from state to state.
Health Insurance and Managed Care; Reform and Reorganization; Prices (Fares, Fees and Rates); Colonoscopy; Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2010);

People are not going to shop for colonoscopies.
They will go to their primary care doctors who will send them to a gastroenterologist.

Nuclear Power Plant in Limbo Decides to Close

Southern California’s San Onofre power plant had not run since radioactive steam escaped from damaged tubes in 2012, and the owners decided to close it permanently, citing the high cost of not running.

It will cost California more to close them than to fix and run them.

Health Apps as Parenting Aids
