A rather trivial problem. The cost of the metal bezel may be significant for the manufacturer. I am sure the circuit board is significant. To change the gap location to the local of the cameras would require changes in both. There fat fingers would not short the high impedance lump. The optical paths would guard it. Version 4h is on its way if Apple is as sharp as I think it is.
