Disaster in the Amazon

While the gulf tragedy is the big oil story of the moment, Ecuador is still hurting from destructive drilling going back decades.

Disaster in the Amazon

It's not surprising that Texaco polluted the Amazon basin. Their management has been involved in questionable deals and racist policies previously. We, the US, must take serious steps to heavily tax oil and gas hogs, SUV's, and luxury cars. We must realize that cheap oil is not our inalienable right, as most red=blooded American males believe. Of course, heavy taxation is not politically possible. So we will muddle through day to day until we slowly choke on our own exhaust.

"The indigenous residents may be suffering (they’re in much worse shape than the people on the gulf coast) but the Chevron-Texaco crowd feels real good about itself. The big money was made, and the trash was left behind."

The gold rush mentality is not a civilized. Oil extraction is much like gold mining. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydraulic_mining)
