Teachers Facing Weakest Market in Years

Teachers, and any other out-of-work Americans, can find their plight predicted in Galbraith's "The Affluent Society." Even in the '50s, he noted the inequality between the public and private sectors. The private sector can whip up needs through advertisement, but schools, parks, roads, cannot advertise. So we demand lower taxes to buy more and more crap. School budgets are cut. Our kids sit in larger and larger classes. And teachers, not to mention parks and roads, go begging.

Paying for others "Benefits" is never popular. That those "benefits" are essential is not obvious to all.
