Operation Rolling Tantrum

Oh, boy. This isn’t going to end, even when or if a deal is reached on defusing the austerity bomb; John Boehner has just declared that he’s going to hold the full faith and credit of the United States hostage every time we hit the debt limit. Nor will it be a case of holding the nation at gunpoint until it meets GOP demands; Republicans are signaling that they don’t intend to make any specific proposals, they’re just going to yell and stamp their feet until Obama soothes them somehow.
So this is going to be nightmarish, unless Obama surrenders — which I don’t think he will (because he shouldn’t).
And one thing to think about: if the next two years are, as they seem likely to be, one long Republican tantrum, the 2014 election is not going to be a normal midterm. It will instead be a referendum on GOP obstructionism, which may attract a lot more attention — and much higher turnout — than normal.

Jolla Mobile Set To Launch It's Sailfish OS Today, Signs Deal with Finnish Telco

Posted by Unknown Lamer
from the getting-crowded-in-here dept.
New submitter zzats writes "The Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Jolla, started by ex-Nokia Meego engineers, is showing it's Linux-based Sailfish OS for the public for the first time today. The first keynote speech aired at 9:15 GMT, with an UI-focused presentation starting later, 15:00 GMT. In addition to using the OS on their own devices, Jolla is planning to license it to third party manufacturers. The company has previously stated their initial focus for creating an ecosystem is in the Chinese market." sfcrazy adds: "Jolla has signed a deal with Finland's 3rd largest mobile operator DNA to market the MeeGo based smartphones in the Finnish market."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jolla

Jolla Oy[1] (internationally Jolla Ltd., commonly called Jolla Mobile in many sources) is an independent Finland-based designer, developer and seller of smartphones. Jolla is developing an operating system for various mobile devices[2] called Sailfish OS. Sailfish is based on the core distribution of the Mer project,[3] which continues the previous work of the MeeGo project.[4]
Jolla continues the work started by Nokia that produced the Nokia N9 with the MeeGo version Harmattan. After Nokia abandoned their participation in the MeeGo project in favour of Windows Phone, the directors and core professionals from Nokia's N9 team left the company and together formed Jolla, to bring MeeGo back to market mainstream.
Jolla has unveiled their first smartphone(s) at the Slush event in Helsinki on 21 November 2012.[5][6][7]

Official website sailfishos.org
Sailfish is a Linux-based mobile operating system developed by Jolla for use in its upcoming smartphones and can be used for any of mobile devices.
It is based on MeeGo and Mer, use standards established with MeeGo which were used and continued in the Mer, like eg. API. Mer project is the core OS that serves as the base of Sailfish OS. It provides a functional core Linux stack that boots up to the screen but without any UI and without any hardware adaptation eg. Mer does not have system kernel. Nemo provides a functional UI framework and it has its own UI and application set that are compatible with Sailfish. However Nemo applications are not at the moment included in Sailfish OS and the UI is radically different. The Sailfish OS and the Sailfish SDK are based on the core and tools of the Mer operating system core,[1] which is a revival of the core of the MeeGo project[2] of Nokia, Intel, and Linux Foundation among others. Sailfish includes a proprietary user interface that Jolla intends to use to differentiate its smartphones from others and as a competitive advantage against devices that run Google's Android or Apple's iOS.[3]
Jolla said that mobile phone manufacturers (e.g. Nokia, Samsung etc.) will be able to license and use Sailfish on a phone, similarly like Android. The details of licensing have not been presented yet, but it was mentione the whole Sailfish OS is to be lisensed as the open source.[4] The used parts like e.g. the Mer core are open sources upon and by open source licenses which allow to use them in the Sailfish OS, hence they are open sources by itself.
Jolla reported that Sailfish will be compatible with Android apps thanks to built in Alien Dalvik layer from Myriad Group, known from running Android apps with Nokia N9. Many Android applications will run on Jolla devices unchanged. To take advantage of all UI and other features of Sailfish OS and make applications fast they may need porting them to native QT/QML, with use of extensive guides available on how to do that. The same refers to using MeeGo, including MeeGo Harmattan, applications on Jolla devices.
Although Sailfish has been presented first for mobile use with upcoming smartphones by Jolla, thanks to being a continuation of MeeGo and using Mer core and the open source philosophy behind them both, it is also OS for general purposes and devices like smart televisions, computers, laptops, netbooks, tablets, navigations, cameras, household devices of many kinds, for automotive in cars and IVI, for sailing purposes in yachts and boats, and others. The Sailfis Linux OS in the same way as the MeeGo and the Mer projects it is not limited to use in mobiles only, but can be used with other forms of consumer electronics.[5] [6]
Jolla's Sailfish OS works in a tablet too.[7] About tablet in November of 2012 it was said that we could see Sailfish tablet, but Jolla itself will on this first wave concentrate on a smartphone.[8]

Now to find a unit.
