The trick is to make it sell.

What is included surprised me.

Big Government and the Crisis

Just a quick picture. On the right, it’s an item of faith that the crisis in Europe represents a failure of the welfare state. So what is the correlation between the size of government and recent economic performance?
None at all, as far as I can see."

Down Argentina Way

Matt Yglesias, who just spent time in Argentina, writes about the lessons of that country’s recovery following its exit from the one-peso-one-dollar “convertibility law”. As he says, it’s a remarkable success story, one that arguably holds lessons for the euro zone.
I’d just add something else: press coverage of Argentina is another one of those examples of how conventional wisdom can apparently make it impossible to get basic facts right. We keep getting stories about Ireland’s recovery when there is, in fact, no recovery — but there should be, darn it, because they’ve done the “right” thing, so that’s what we’ll report.
And conversely, articles about Argentina are almost always very negative in tone — they’re irresponsible, they’re renationalizing some industries, they talk populist, so they must be going very badly. Never mind this:
Just to be clear, I think Brazil is going pretty well, and has had good leadership. But why exactly is Brazil an impressive “BRIC” while Argentina is always disparaged? Actually, we know why — but it doesn’t speak well for the state of economics reporting."

Europe knows better.  There is something else going on.

"It is not what you don't know
but rather what you do know that just aint so."

A socialist favors state ownership of industry.
A fascist favors industrial ownership of the state.
Capitalism favors separation of industry and state.
A Marxist believes a socialist government behaves morally.
Oligarchy believes there are natural aristocrats who operate for the common good.
I believe in representative democracy and the regulation of industry.
Government and industry are interdependent.
Government regulates in the interest of the population as a whole.

There are many who are more interested in obfuscation.

Dodging the collapse of the equity market may not be possible.
I look at my holdings and cannot choose what to sell.
I look at the news from Europe.  The currency controls should be up.
They are not.
I look at the U.S. market.  It is sinking.
The traders think it oversold.

I saw the negative reception of the new product from Research in Motion.
Both the release and the reaction were inappropriate.  I will watch the stock and perhaps buy in a few weeks.
Sysco is in the same bind along with Nokia.

Satellite broad band is totally mobile.  It is also out of my budget range.
Get your agency to equip you.  They will want to own all the connect time.
I will just have to suffer until you have a land line.

Photovoltaic systems are the most practical local power off the grid.
They are still expensive and low energy compared to other ways of powering the grid.

Fossil carbon must be limited and reduced a very long way.
There will be nearly as much objection to that as regulating the calculation and limitation of risk in loans.

Front line again.

The U.S. banks will not be allowed to fail dramatically.
They will be purchased by the government and executed with care.
Debt will not be forgiven without formal bankruptcy.

Things financial are about to be very messy.

The world will not end.

Beyond that it is anybody's guess.

My guess is that we will extend and pretend into November.

The next congress is going to have an emergency from its start.

Coordinated Austerity

Antonia Fatas points out that there was a sharp turn to austerity on both sides of Atlantic in 2010 — which is a large factor in the weakness of economies in both places:
But guess who didn’t make an equally sharp turn? (All data from Eurostat)
In general, everything — everything — you hear conventionally, from the legend of Irish recovery to the legend of German austerity is just not true."

“The Ethics and Efficacy of the President’s Counterterrorism Strategy”

"
To you and everyone here at the Woodrow Wilson Center, thank you for your invaluable contributions—your research, your scholarship—which help further our national security every day. I very much appreciate this opportunity to discuss President Obama’s counterterrorism strategy, in particular, its ethics and efficacy.
It is fitting that we have this discussion here at the Woodrow Wilson Center. It was here in August 2007 that then-Senator Obama described how he would bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end and refocus our efforts on “the war that has to be won”—the war against al- Qa’ida, particularly in the tribal regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He said that we would carry on this fight while upholding our laws and our values and that he would work with allies and partners whenever possible. But he also made it clear that he would not hesitate to use military force against terrorists who pose a direct threat to America. And he said that if he had actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets, including in Pakistan, he would act to protect the American people."

This was an opinion without power or responsibility.
Our military acts on it at their peril.

    View the above with skepticism.

    Corporations are non sentient constructs.
As such they are incapable of responsible action.
In short they are sock puppets.
Actions taken in their names are those of their executives.
Corporations can have no politics and they are incapable of speech.
Corporate income taxes are fiction and should have no place in law.
Corporate actions are the actions of their executives.
Financial liability is limited to ownership.
Criminal liability must lie with the executives.
This limits the actions of the directors.

Advocating corporate income taxation demonstrates incompetence.

"The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics."

From Think Progress. Two leading political scholars — representing the conservative American Enterprise Institute and the centrist Brookings Institution – have published a must-read article, "Let’s just say it: The Republicans are the problem."
We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party.
The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.
They also note, accurately, that the Dems have become the centrist party of the status quo, which suits them just fine. Your mileage may differ.
