U.S. Formally Begins a New Era in Iraq

“U.S. Formally Begins a New Era in Iraq - New York Times http://nyti.ms/avW0y8”

Obama knows how to work miracles. Now we need to let Iraq have it's civil war or figure out how to enforce peace. Neither the Shia or the Sunni have surrendered.

‘Where Broadway Comes Home to Sleep’

“Why I love where I live -> ‘Where Broadway Comes Home to Sleep’ - http://nyti.ms/brqRvF”

I really know nothing about it. It would be a google search-
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Orange_Township,_New_Jersey_%281861-1922%29 )
It’s Official: This Is New York’s Hottest Summer

There was no cataclysm that defined the summer, but the average temperature — 77.8 degrees — was a record.

It has not been that bad here. There is the beach. The trees have knocked ten degrees off the highs. My brother stuck a portable in mothers room. It knocks the temperature down for bed time. Cool sea breezes bring the ambient down after midnight and they stay comfortable until about noon. I have not been getting to the city much for the bicycle business. City people are nuts. They have been buying heavily and renting all the summer. It must be the Hudson bike path.

Again it is a rare day that is over ninety here. There are reasons to live out of town near the shore. We are sixty feet up. No storm surge problems. I am watching the hurricanes with deep interest.

You Ain’t Seen This Before

With the Israelis, the Palestinians and the Iraqis, President Obama makes an ambitious reach to change the Middle East.

Obama must make the attempt. I would not put a great deal of money or reputation on success. The parties have no desire to surrender. All of them would gladly accept surrender from the opposition. In this case there is no slack to negotiate.

Rwanda Threatens to Pull Peacekeepers From Darfur

“Interested in: Rwanda Threatens to Pull Peacekeepers From Darfur - http://nyti.ms/98IxX7”

Rwanda will withdraw their "peace keepers". The UN must find others. If the US kicked in the cost it would not hurt my feelings.

It would be a good way to employ the returning vets if the Republicans permit it.

Islam would have a hard time with that. It would be practice at "Nation Building".

The Republicans would have a really hard time with that. The vets are the wrong class and everyone involved would learn.

Touchable Gadgets Win Over Users

Researchers say that touch screens are the start of a trend to make computers more open to human gestures.

Kinaesthetic communication is lovely. The data rate tends to be low. I just hate my touch pads and have no experience with others. I also dislike track balls and most joysticks clunk. Tablets are not ready for prime time and light pens are not usable with modern monitors. With crts they require a position that was never available. There is a way to get feedback with a projector but I have not seen it.

projectors are too expensive still for general use.

Roger Ebert on Food: Still Cooking

After losing his lower jaw to cancer, the film critic, who can’t eat, has written a cookbook that is an ode to the rice cooker.

It's wonderful that Ebert can communicate well enough to satisfy his audience.

I would read his book with some interest but not enough to seek it out. I think I already cook this way often. I value crunchy textures that simply are not available with the technique.

If there are ways of getting crunch this way I want to know about them.
